Notices: The intro was originally performed on synthesizers only.
I arranged here for two guitars. Jan Hammer's fast
synth riff at the end of the introcould be hard to play on
a guitar.Use a heavy dose of echo repeats to simulate
the recording. The form of this tune is similar to that of a
blues, except that it only utilizes the I & IV chords (E &
A) as opposed to the I, IV, V progressions of traditional
blues. It is also a 20-bar form, with the last bar in 3/4
(most often used for a drum fill). Rhythm figure 2, which
is played behind the melody, is repeated in this
arrangement for the solo sections. Lack of space
prevents us from notating exactly what Jan played
behind each solo, as he improvises quite a
bit and plays each section differently. Jeff's soloing is
based primarily on the E blues scale (E, G, A, Bb, B, D)
and E pentatonic major (E, F#, G#, B, C#) with a bit of
A pentatonic major (A, B, C#, E, F#) in his first solo.
Notice Jeff's great tone and aggressive attitude,
utilizing trills, exaggerated vibratos, natural and artificial
harmonics and the tremolo bar. The last section
features Jan and Jeff soloing together
over the two intro synth parts, with slight variations on
the chords accents. Jeff's soloing here is based
primarily on E Dorian (E, F#, G, A, B, C#, D) and E
Mixolydian (E, F#, G#, A, B, C#, D). This is a great
tune to work out with a band and jam on, as all the
parts are interesting and will provide a challenge.
