Notices: When it comes to guitar playing, there is nothing more
exciting than to hear a player gracefully flow with in a
solo. One of my favorite solos that flow would be Allan
Holdsworth's solo to "City Nights" from the album
Secrets. So this lesson is a little concept on how to
play arpeggios using legato technique and how to
make them musical. I find these shapes extremely
useful for creating solo lines that flow. Don't be afraid
of the long stretches and the string skipping. They are
great exercises for your left hand technique.

Example A

Here are all the 7th arpeggios in the minor family. Learn
one arpeggios shape at a time. So start with the first
one A-7. For the picking, pick once and hammer on
the rest of the notes. Let the pick glide when crossing
the strings as if you where sweeping. The picking
pattern does not change. Also when learning the
shape memorize the intervals on each string. So for A-7
you have on the 5th string (Root & b3rc), 4th
string(5th), 3rd string(b7, root, b3rd), 1st string (5th,
b7th, root.) As you learn the other ones you will notice
changes in the intervals.
It's always good to know what your hands are playing.
Once you have the shapes memorized, practice them
with a metronome.

Example B

Here is a very cool improvisation concept. When you
are playing in a minor key or over a min7th chord, try
play ing the maj7 arpeggio of the relative major starting
from the 7th interval. So for instance, lets say we are p
laying over A-7 chord, you would play a Cmaj7
arpeggio starting from B. So here is a line using legato
shapes a nd incorporating the improv concept. Play it
over an A-7th chord. So if you notice, the Cmaj7
arpeggio is reall y the Amin7th arpeggio with 9ths
substituting all the roots.

Example C

This is the same idea but it sounds more exotic. This
could be played over an A-(maj7) chord. You have an
A-(m aj7) arpeggio so when you substitute the roots
with the 9ths you end up with a C augmented with a
maj7th or Cma j7#5.

Conclusion

Try to apply these arpeggios shapes and improv
concepts within your solo ideas. Also try to work out
shapes for all the major arpeggios. And most
importantly, to maintain an optimum musician life style,
eat lots of ginseng , power bars & spirolina so that you
may stay up all night and practice.

Lyric
Vagabundo y atorrante sos

Tomo ginebra
Mirandolos pelear
Y cuando llega la patrulla
Le pregunto al oficial:
¿Vos patrullando… tu mujer donde esta?
